What is Integrative Massotherapy?

Integrative massotherapy is a manipulative body-based practice of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM).

For the purposes of this website, it is a specific definition meaning that massage is integrated into a traditional medical or wellness model for the purpose of providing a health or wellness benefit.

What is CAM?

According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, "CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine."

CAM modalities can be placed into four major types:

  • Manipulative body-based - such as massage
  • Whole medical systems - homeopathy, naturopathy, Chinese Medicine
  • Mind-Body medicine - prayer, meditation, art, music
  • Biologically based practices - herbal remedies, dietary supplements -this may be the most controversial practice
